What blooms in august?
Looking to add year-round colour to your garden? Here are five plants that bloom in August!
1. Aster - this herbaceous perennial is native to Canada, with Douglas Aster being the variety that grows naturally in BC. The variety pictured here is a cultivated variety, but still does well in our climate!
2. Oregano - the herb? Absolutely! Incorporating edible plants into your landscaping is great way to productively use a typically decorative space in a more useful way, and many edible plants are also beautiful… like oregano!
3. Orpine (sedum) - fun fact: the scientific name for this plant was recently changed from Sedum telephium to Hylotelephium telephium, and though it is still often referred to as sedum, orpine is a common name (non-scientific) that encompasses this upright variety a little more accurately. However, if you want to make sure you’re buying the right plant, it’s always best to use the scientific name! Just for your entertainment though, here are a few other common names it gets called: frog’s stomach, harping Johnny, mid-summer men, orphan John, and witch’s moneybags 😂
4. Echibekia - is a cross between echinacea and Rudbeckia (black-eyed Susan). I know genetic modification (GMO) is a bit of a scary word, but cross pollination and selective breeding are used to produce most of the plants we see at the garden centre, and are processes that occur in nature - as opposed to genetic engineering which is done in a lab.
5. Goldenrod - another stunning BC native plant, with such a unique texture and flower shape! And how can you be sad with yellow that bright in your garden?
